Job Market Update

It seems even the media are now looking at the glass half full with a recent article in the NY Times: 'Worst is over, executives say, or at least hope'.

It may be a case of hopefulness or that people are really seeing things start to shift. In May, Six Figures has noticed a lot more activity and confidence in the market. According to this NY Times article, "a recent survey of human resources executives found that most believe that their most drastic cost-cutting measures are behind them." The survey by Watson Wyatt also shows that "more than half of the companies say they do not plan layoffs in the next 12 months. Sixty-seven percent say they do not expect any hiring freezes."

The Challenges and Benefits of Hiring Smart People

One of the fundamental mistakes that I have seen throughout my HR and Recruitment career is that most people tend to avoid hiring those who are smarter than them. Perhaps it has to do with our egos?! As identified in Jim Collins 'From Good to Great' the best businesses get the smart people on board and then figure out where to put them, as highlighted in 'How to Get Talent to Board Your Bus'.

The Smart & Lazy and the Dumb & Energetic - What is the Right Staffing Mix?

Most recruiters will hire candidates who have done the same or a similar job before and who they like. Competition within businesses is generally fierce, so it takes a well adjusted person to be able to firstly identify talent (which does not come nicely labeled) and to then hire and manage these smart individuals. Ultimately, if done right, everyone wins; the manager, the employee and the business. Should businesses be hiring smarter? What is the right mixture of intellect and energy? Book Review for "How to Succeed as a Lifestyle Entrepreneur"

There are many great books out there for people contemplating setting up their own business. This book by Gary Schine contains some great practical business advice and tools. However, before you get to this part of the book, it starts by very cleverly forcing you to think about what you personally want for yourself. As anyone in business will tell you, an idea does matter and so does a degree of expertise but ultimately it is about passion and tenacity that will see you over the line.

There is an emerging trend of people moving into self employment for lifestyle reasons, which is definitely an admirable and valid reason. 'How to succeed as a lifestyle entrepreneur' is very much about designing your worklife around what matters most to you, your passion, your area of expertise, relationships and most importantly your lifestyle. It is sensible in that it does not encourage people to set up businesses that are not going to be financially viable; however, it does support the notion that you don't have to be in business to make lots of money (though you want to be cash flow positive). The message is it's important to love what you do and that you can control the lifestyle that comes with having your own business.

The concepts are somewhat similar to that of people who have a 'portfolio career', a growth area in itself as people look earn a living from multiple ways simultaneously, such as a part-time accountant employed by a firm who then works for themselves as a part-time personal trainer during the rest of the working week and is also a hobby/paid photographer on the weekends. People are starting to shift from the 9-5 job to working a few days and maybe some evenings; whatever floats your boat, pays the bills and keeps you happy!

This is a great and inspiring book with some great case studies, for those who are contemplating starting their own business or having a portfolio career. Gary says "Business is not an end to itself for the lifestyle entrepreneur. Rather, it is a means to an end".

Share your thoughts about this book on our Book Review for 'How to Succeed as a Lifestyle Entrepreneur' or any other books or articles you would like to recommend for those looking at a portfolio career or starting a lifestyle business.

Pursuing Fame, Wealth and Good Looks are Potentially Dead Ends!

According to ScienceDaily if you think having loads of money, fetching looks, or the admiration of many will improve your life — think again. A new study by three University of Rochester researchers demonstrates that progress on these fronts can actually make a person less happy. "People understand that it's important to pursue goals in their lives and they believe that attaining these goals will have positive consequences. This study shows that this is not true for all goals," says author Edward Deci, professor of psychology and the Gowen Professor in the Social Sciences at the University.
